DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying
it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected
to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request
registration while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period.
With registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using
the software to an updated program with printed manual. Copyright laws
apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder
retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated below.
Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there
are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and
distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group.
For example, some authors require written permission before a commercial
disk vendor may copy their Shareware. Shareware is a distribution method,
not a type of software. You should find software that suits your needs and
pocketbook, whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system
makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And
because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the
ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't
pay for it.

Users of DUFUL must accept this disclaimer of warranty: "DUFUL is supplied
as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied,
including, without limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of
fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages,
direct or consequential, which may result from the use of DUFUL." DUFUL is
a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user for
evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do not
give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of
"user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with
quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for
programmers to continue to develop new products. If you find this program
useful and find that you are using DUFUL and continue to use DUFUL after a
reasonable trial period, you must make a registration payment of $10.00 to
David L. Weiner. The $10.00 registration fee will license one copy for use
on any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software just
like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any number of
people and may be freely moved from one computer location to another, so
long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it's
being used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different
persons at the same time. Commercial users of DUFUL must register and pay
for their copies of DUFUL within 30 days of first use or their license is

Weiner. Anyone distributing DUFUL for any kind of remuneration must first
contact David L. Weiner at the address above for authorization. You are
encouraged to pass a copy of DUFUL along to your friends for evaluation.

What is DUFUL?
DUFUL is a small program (less than 40k) that looks at all of your
logical hard drives and displays a graphic representation of the amount of
disk space used vs. the amount of disk space free. DUFUL will also tell
you the size of the drive in megabytes, as well as giving you a percentage
and actual megabytes of the used and free space. DUFUL is not a TSR --
once it gives you the information, the program will exit and free up any
memory used.
Installation
Installing DUFUL couldn't be easier! Just put DUFUL.EXE in your root
directory, and add a line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT to run DUFUL where you want
it.
System Requirements
DUFUL will run on just about anything! MS-DOS 3.0+/DR-DOS 5.0+, 256KB
RAM, A HERCULES MONO/CGA/EGA/VGA monitor and a hard drive is all that's
needed.
Using DUFUL
Using DUFUL is a easy as typing "DUFUL nn<RET>", where nn is the
threshold percent that you want to be notified at. To get a list of
commands at anytime, type "DUFUL /?". For example, typing "DUFUL 40<RET>"
generated the following screens on my computer:

If you have a color monitor, the displays will be in color! The space used
bar will be in red, and the space free in green.
Command Line Switches
All the valid command line switches are described below. They can be
placed in any order on the line. Only the slash and first letter are
required, but feel free to spell out each term if you'd like!

Terse Mode
To disable the pop-up screen, add "/t" or "/terse" on the command line
after the threshold percentage.
Mono Mode
To force monochrome mode, add "/m" or "/mono" on the command line
after the threshold percentage.
Wait Mode
If you use a shell such as DOSSHELL, COMMANDER or PCSHELL (to name a
few) that clears the screen when it starts up, add a "/w" or "/wait" on the
command line after the threshold percentage. This will force DUFUL to
pause and give the ever popular "Press any key to continue" prompt, and
wait for you to press any key. This will also work if you run DUFUL from
WINDOWS.
Network and other non-contiguous logical drives
DUFUL has the capability of checking non-contiguous logical drives such as
network drives. This can be enabled by adding a "/f=d1d2...d26' to the command
line, where d1d2...d26 is the list of drives you want to check. The first
three characters MUST be "/f=", otherwise DUFUL will not be able to parse the
drive list. For example, "/f=ceg" will ONLY check logical drives C:, E: and G:
This can also be used to check floppy drives if you'd like.
Compressed drives
DUFUL will work with and has been tested under SUPERSTOR and STACKER,
although the amount free and used will not match what is reported by DOS's
CHKDSK program. It will, however, match the amount free listed by a DIR.
This is due to the way SUPERSTOR and STACKER compress your data. If I can
obtain references to how SUPERSTOR and STACKER report the information to
CHKDSK, I'll add the capability to future versions.
CD-ROM's
DUFUL will see CD-ROM drives, but does not support them fully. At this
time, DUFUL will report a CD as 100% full. Also, DOS seems to be reporting a
size of 128mb for the CD regardless of the actual capacity of the CD. DUFUL
will not work with audio-only music CD's, as they do not have a DOS type
directory that DUFUL can read. If an audio CD is in the drive when DUFUL is
run, DOS will report an Undefined Error, and give a (I)gnore, (A)bort or
(R)etry message. Just choose Abort, and you'll be fine.
Running under Windows
DUFUL will run under windows, and an icon is provided in the archive
for your convenience. You will have to run DUFUL from a .pif file, and at least
place the "/w" switch in the optional parameters section of the pif editor.
DUFUL.REG file
The DUFUL.REG file contains the serial number and name of registered
users. DUFUL will search your path for this file, so make sure that it is in a
directory that is in the path. The root directory is recommended. This file
MUST be present even for unregistered users of DUFUL.

What's next?
There's not much more that can be done to the functionality of the
program, but there are a few things that I'd like to add:
1) Provide better support of compressed drives
2) Provide better support of CD-ROM's
3) Windows specific version?

If you happen to stumble on any bugs, please report them to me at the
address or phone number listed above. Please provide a description of what
exactly happened, a description of your hardware configuration, and copies
of your autoexec.bat and config.sys files. I'll do my best to swat the
bug.
